A new framework for the diagnosis, staging and management of obesity in adults

The European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO) is pleased to present a new framework for the diagnosis, staging and management of obesity in adults to better align with the concept of obesity as an adiposity-based chronic disease.

The European Association for the Study of Obesity has published an important new paper in Nature Medicine outlining an updated framework on the diagnosis, staging, and management of obesity in adults, emphasising understanding obesity as an adiposity-based chronic disease. The framework focuses on comprehensive, personalized evaluation and management strategies with the objective of improving health.

Our new framework aims to improve obesity management by aligning it with the comprehensive, personalized treatment approaches used for other chronic non communicable diseases (NCDs).

“In order to inspire change in the way obesity is diagnosed and managed among clinicians and understood by relevant stakeholders, EASO has developed this commentary, proposing a new framework for the diagnosis, staging and management of obesity in adults. We believe that this work, in conjunction with similar initiatives, can help to move obesity management in a direction more aligned with the concept of obesity as a chronic disease,” said lead author Professor Luca Busetto.

“We anticipate that, in conjunction with other ongoing initiatives, the recommendations outlined in this paper will contribute to improving obesity management and quality of life in adults living with obesity”, comments Professor Gijs Goossens.
