EASO Early Career Network October Event – Tuesday, 22nd October 2024

EASO Early Career Network October Event – Tuesday, 22nd October 2024

Obesity researchers and professionals are invited to join this month’s EASO Early Career Network (ECN) eLearning Hub webinar and journal club, “Using a Common Language for Obesity”. Join us Tuesday, 22nd October 2024, 4-5pm UK / 5-6pm Paris

Topic: A high-performing, resilient healthcare system requires a common, precise, and scientifically accurate language, used by all stakeholders. This has been lacking in obesity. EASO launched a taxonomy initiative to standardise language used in obesity — from policy to practice. Words matter – accurate framing and consistent terminology are crucial for diagnosis, treatment, research, communication, policymaking, and patient outcomes. This unified approach aligns stakeholders appropriately and leads to better management of obesity as a chronic, relapsing non-communicable disease.

Speaker: Dr Jennifer Baker, Head of Lifecourse Epidemiology at the Center for Clinical Research and Prevention, Copenhagen University Hospital-Bispebjerg and Frederiksberg, Denmark.

Journal Club discussion: Delegates are encouraged to read EASO’s new obesity taxonomy (Bowman-Busato et al., 2024) before the session, and to bring questions for the taxonomy’s principal author, Dr Jennifer Baker. Consider asking questions such as, “Was there a broad enough representation of stakeholders in the development of this taxonomy?” and “What are the potential challenges in implementing this taxonomy in real-world settings?”. For more information on this new taxonomy, see here.

Schedule (Paris time):

  • 5:00-5:05pm: Welcome and introduction
  • 5:05-5:35pm: Overview of the importance of a common language in obesity for healthcare, research, and policy; taxonomy development and key themes; application of the taxonomy and impact for the field of obesity
  • 5:35-6:00pm: Journal Club discussion, close
