As part of our work to align with the updated EASO framework on the diagnosis, staging, and clinical management of obesity https://easo.org/a-new-framework-for-the-diagnosis-staging-and-management-of-obesity-in-adults/ we’ve developed a new infographic highlighting the diverse health impacts of obesity.
This visual resource clearly illustrates how obesity affects multiple body systems in both females and males, with complications spanning neurological, cardiovascular, metabolic, respiratory, reproductive, and musculoskeletal domains. Importantly, the infographic includes conditions such as type 2 diabetes, coronary artery disease, obstructive sleep apnoea, endocrine disorders and certain cancers, alongside less commonly recognised consequences like chronic kidney disease, cognitive decline, and skin disorders.
The infographic reflects the EASO diagnostic criteria framework, emphasising that obesity is defined not just by BMI over 30 kg/m², but also includes increased abdominal adiposity—measured as a waist-to-height ratio over 0.5—in people with a BMI over 25 kg/m². We includes both male and female figures so that this tool can support a more inclusive and sex-specific understanding of the ways obesity can impact health. It’s designed to be used in clinical, public health, and educational settings to support conversations about obesity as a chronic, relapsing disease and to guide appropriate, person-centred care.
