EASO president Professor Volkan Yumuk welcomed the opportunity to contribute to international dialogue around the Madrid Global Obesity Summit and the World Obesity Federation’s Global Obesity Forum, held in Madrid from 26–28 October 2026.

The Global Obesity Summit, co-hosted by the Spanish Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO), in collaboration with UNICEF and the World Bank, brought together governments and international partners to review progress under the WHO Acceleration Plan to Stop Obesity and identify priorities for action towards 2030.

Held alongside the Summit on 26 October, the World Obesity Federation’s Global Obesity Forum provided an important platform for scientific and professional organisations, civil society, policymakers, young people and people living with obesity to exchange perspectives on implementation, accountability and opportunities for collaboration.

EASO engagement reflects our commitment to advancing evidence-based obesity diagnosis, prevention and management, and strengthening the recognition of obesity as a chronic, relapsing disease requiring coordinated, long-term healthcare responses in health care and public policy.

Discussions in Madrid highlighted the importance of translating scientific evidence and international policy commitments into meaningful improvements in healthcare delivery, equitable access to care and person-centred obesity management.

As the international community looks towards 2030, collaboration between scientific societies, healthcare professionals, policymakers and people living with obesity will remain essential to achieving sustained progress.

EASO thanks the World Obesity Federation, WHO and the Spanish hosts for bringing together the global obesity community and supporting continued international cooperation.
