On 4 March 2025, in recognition of World Obesity Day Europe, policymakers, health experts, and civil society came together at the European Parliament in Brussels for the event “Gateway to Better Health: The Case for Coordinated EU Level Action on Obesity.” Hosted by MEP Laurent Castillo (EPP, FR) in partnership with the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO), the event brought critical attention to the urgent need for unified EU-level action on obesity.
At the heart of the discussions was a call to recognise obesity as a chronic, relapsing disease and a gateway to over 230 health complications, including other non-communicable diseases (NCDs). With contributions from the European Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare, WHO Europe, leading European medical societies, and compelling testimonies from the European Coalition for People Living with Obesity, the event underscored the importance of systemic change.
With over 70 participants in attendance — including Members of the European Parliament, representatives from Permanent Representations, industry stakeholders, and patient advocates — this event marked a pivotal moment in advancing the case for a comprehensive and coordinated EU response to obesity. It reinforced a unifying message: addressing obesity together is essential to improving public health and advancing health in Europe. Addressing obesity is central to improving Europe’s overall health outcomes – truly a gateway to better health.
