World Obesity Day Europe: Transforming Systems to Address Obesity Comprehensively

Obesity prevention and management demands a unified, evidence-based approach across European healthcare systems. As we mark World Obesity Day Europe (#WODEurope), EASO emphasises the critical importance of addressing obesity through systematic change, from robust evidence based research, policy development through to clinical practice.

Obesity is a chronic disease that affects millions of Europeans, impacting both individual health outcomes and healthcare systems. The theme “Changing Systems, Healthier Lives” underscores the necessity of transforming our approach to obesity prevention and management. This transformation requires coordinated action across multiple sectors, including healthcare, policy, research, and education.

Our commitment to “Addressing Obesity Together” reflects the need for collaborative efforts between healthcare professionals, researchers, policymakers, and patients. Evidence-based interventions, supported by robust health policies, are essential for developing effective obesity management strategies.

Key areas of focus include:

  • Strengthening healthcare systems to build capacity, recognise and treat obesity as a chronic NCD in its own right and a gateway to other diseases
  • Implementing comprehensive clinical guidelines across European healthcare settings
  • Enhancing professional education and training in obesity management
  • Developing supportive policies that address environmental and social determinants of health
  • Promoting patient-centered care and reducing stigma in healthcare settings

This high level policy event in the European Parliament, takes places on World Obesity Day, 4 March 2025. Stakeholders will present the case for advancing obesity care in Europe and will advocate for systemic change. Together, we are working to build healthier communities and improve outcomes for people living with obesity.
