Turning the Page in Obesity Management: Culinary Medicine and Patient Experience for Primary Care Professionals – Summer School 2025

Dra. Violeta Moize

On July 11th 2025, as part of the 4th edition of the Barcelona Hospital Clínic Summer School at Fundació Alícia, an innovative workshop took place focused on innovation in nutrition in obesity management and care: “Culinary Medicine: Cooking the Path to Change in Obesity Care.”

This initiative began four years ago as a collaboration between people living with obesity and primary care professionals. Participants came together to share experiences, reflections, and learnings with the goal of reimagining obesity care through a more human centred, integral, transformative lens.

The program combined dialogue and experiential workshops. The agenda included

  • Welcome remarks by Toni Massanés (Fundació Alícia)
  • Workshop 1: The critical view of people towards obesity programs, an open conversation between individuals living with obesity and healthcare professionals, with contributions from Ximena Ramos Salas (Bias 180, EASO), Joan Fernando Peiró (Patient Experience Observatory, HCB), and Violeta Moizé (Hospital Clínic Barcelona, SEDYN)
  • A demonstrative culinary workshop led by Fundació Alícia, showcasing how culinary medicine can serve as a practical and motivating tool in clinical practice
  • A final debate and summary session, where participants proposed ways to advance existing models of care, moving toward a more empathetic, participatory, and sustainable approach

Participants valued the experiential, dynamic, and creative nature of the program, which placed emphasis not only on health outcomes but also on personal well-being, the joy of eating, and environmental sustainability.

This initiative marks an important step forward in integrating culinary medicine, motivational interviewing, and patient experience into training programs and clinical care in Barcelona. The primary aim is clear: to foster obesity care that is more empathetic, effective, and stigma-free.

Initiatives like this support scientific societies to champion innovation and collaboration between professionals and people living with obesity, paving the way for the future of healthcare.
