Milestones from BIO-STREAMS

BIO-STREAMS is a 48-month EU Horizon Europe project (2023-2027) addressing childhood obesity through an integrated digital health approach. The consortium of 30 partners across 15 countries has made significant progress across its work plan.

Key achievements include completing systematic literature reviews on obesity risk factors and intervention strategies, developing a common health data model and knowledge graph framework, and designing the technical architecture for the BIO-STREAMS Obesity Platform. The BIO-STREAMS Node Bundles (BNB) – a key IT infrastructure component – have been successfully deployed across the network of clinical and school partners, establishing a distributed biobank infrastructure that enables secure data sharing while maintaining local data control.

With the technical infrastructure now in place, participant recruitment has begun for the clinical studies. The project’s retrospective study and data collection are nearing completion, and prospective data collection is beginning through ongoing clinical and school pilots across seven sites in six countries. Core AI-driven components, including risk assessment tools, personalised recommendation engines, and the ActiveHealth mobile app, are currently being validated.

Earlier this year, BIO-STREAMS partners met in Barcelona to review project progress and plan upcoming activities (photo).
