Welcome Matt Harris, senior surgical resident and PhD fellow from the United Kingdom, to the ECN Board.
Matt is a senior surgical resident in the UK and PhD fellow in cancer data science at Manchester Cancer Research Centre and Leeds Clinical Trials Research Unit. His research focuses on the intersection of obesity, weight loss interventions, and cancer risk, investigating the impact of obesity and weight reduction on cancer incidence. He has developed expertise in clinical trial methodology and In-Silico simulation, Bayesian statistics, and risk prediction, with the aim of informing the design of future interventions targeting obesity-related cancer. His broader academic interests include the translation of data science into clinical practice and the use of novel digital tools to improve outcomes in metabolic disease and oncology, having completed an MSc in surgical innovation at Imperial College London.
Clinically, he is training in general and upper gastrointestinal surgery, with a particular interest in metabolic and bariatric surgery. Beyond research and clinical training, he has taken on leadership roles at a national level, including two years on the executive committee of the Association of Surgeons in Training, the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Roux Group. He also contributes to the MedTech sector as the clinical lead at Inovus Medical, shaping product design, research strategy, and regulatory alignment. He has been a leader in robotic surgical training in the UK, where he chairs the national Robotic and Digital Surgery Trainee committee and is a member of the NHS England robotic implementation group.
Elected to the Board of the European Association for the Study of Obesity’s Early Career Network, he is committed to advancing collaborative research, promoting mentorship, and building bridges between early-career clinicians, scientists, and industry partners working to address the challenges of obesity and its related diseases.
