From Recognition to Action: Bridging Science and Policy through the Italian Obesity Law — A Model for Europe

Addressing obesity effectively requires coordinated, sustained and structured action across health systems, supported by scientific societies, policymakers and patient representatives. Although the evidence base and therapeutic options have advanced considerably, translation into integrated, system-level care frameworks has remained limited in many European countries.

Italy has now set an important policy precedent. With the approval of Law No. 149/2025, “Provisions for the Prevention and Care of Obesity,” on 3 October 2025, the country has established a comprehensive national framework for addressing obesity. Originating from Legislative Act No. 1483 and sponsored by Hon. Roberto Pella, the legislation provides a structured foundation for prevention, care and system coordination — positioning Italy as a leader in embedding obesity within formal health policy and national strategy.
