People First Language

Person-first language, also called people-first language, places the person before their diagnosis. Person-first language is widely used across many chronic diseases and disabilities to promote respectful, person-centred communication.

  • Addressing Weight Bias
EASO promotes person-first language and the use of non-stigmatising images in all obesity-related written and verbal communications. These approaches can help reduce weight bias and obesity stigma by avoiding language and imagery that define individuals by their disease or reinforce stereotypes. Using person-first language supports respectful, person-centred healthcare, research and policy.

  • ECPO People First Campaign
People First language has been widely adopted for most chronic diseases and disabilities – but not obesity. We believe it’s time to make a change.
