EASO Award for Best Collaborative Project: Nova Medical School of Lisbon

Excellence in World Obesity Day Europe Promotion, 2024

Nova Medical School of Lisbon, Portugal, has been recognised for their outstanding week-long initiative around World Obesity Day Europe. Their comprehensive program demonstrated exceptional commitment to advancing obesity awareness, education, and patient care.

Nova’s multifaceted approach encompassed both academic and community engagement, reflecting the Medical School’s core mission of community service. Their target audience included current healthcare practitioners, medical and nutrition students, patients living with obesity, and the general public.

The initiative featured several innovative components: an educational hub – the “WOD Educators Stand” on campus, development of comprehensive obesity information sheets, and an interactive educational game designed to explore knowledge levels while addressing unconscious biases and prejudices.

Further enriching the program were three signature events: a public Open Day at the clinic, specialised culinary medicine workshops conducted at the NMS Kitchen Lab, and a seminar examining the interconnection between obesity and depression.

This collaborative effort exemplifies how medical institutions can effectively bridge the gap between healthcare education and community outreach, while fostering a deeper understanding of obesity as a medical condition.
