The European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO) recently joined colleagues in Seoul, South Korea, for ICOMES 2026, hosted by the Korean Society for the Study of Obesity (KSSO) from 3-5 September. The congress brought together leading national and international experts across obesity biology, clinical management, cardiometabolic health, precision medicine and patient perspectives, with a strong emphasis on translating new evidence into practice.
EASO was pleased to be represented in two key sessions of the scientific programme.
KSSO-EASO Joint Symposium on Management of CVD and Cardiometabolic Risk Factors in Obesity
Experts representing both societies contributed international perspectives on cardiovascular, metabolic and hepatic complications of obesity. Dr Kyung-Hee Kim (Incheon Sejong Hospital, Korea) opened with a cardiology perspective on obesity and heart failure, including its contribution to risk and progression and the emerging role of obesity treatment in heart failure care. Dr Yu Mi Kang (Harvard Medical School, USA) presented cardiovascular risk and new approaches to lipid disorders. Professor Martin Haluzik (Institute for Clinical and Experimental Medicine, Czech Republic) discussed emerging therapies to affect both liver dysfunction and cardiovascular risk, highlighting the updated 2026 EASO pharmacological treatment algorithm and its incorporation of liver-specific outcomes including MASH resolution and liver fibrosis improvement.

Dr Jennifer Baker (University of Copenhagen, Denmark), EASO President-Elect, presented an invited Plenary Lecture on Body Size in Childhood: Patterns, Trends, and Future Health
Dr Jennifer Baker shared global evidence linking thinness, overweight and obesity in childhood with later health outcomes across the life course, including cancer, while emphasising childhood as a key opportunity of intervention that can meaningfully influence long-term health.

EASO thanks KSSO for a warm welcome in Seoul and looks forward to continuing our collaboration.
