Using Simulation Modelling to Inform Public Health Policies

Dr Charlotte Buckley (Department of Psychology, Institute of Population Health, University of Liverpool) will introducethe use of simulation modelling in public health research and discuss how modelling approaches can be applied to real-world policy questions.

Dr Buckley is Chief Investigator of the ongoing NIHR-funded NOURISH project (Nutrition, Obesity and Unhealthy food Relationships in food Insecure populations: Systems modelling of Health-related policies and outcomes). The project uses systems modelling approaches (microsimulation and agent-based modelling) to explore relationships between food insecurity, food environments and health outcomes, including obesity.

The learning outcomes of this session are to:

  • Understand how simulation modelling can be used to explore the potential impacts of public health policies and examine inequalities in health outcomes
  • Identify key steps and challenges involved in developing policy-focused simulation models
  • Consider where simulation modelling may add value to research relevant to obesity and public health research

This webinar will include a presentation from Dr Buckley followed by a moderated Q&A. ECN Board members will chair the session and provide a brief update on current ECN activities.
