EASO colleagues were pleased to contribute to the International Congress on Obesity, held in Mexico City 🇲🇽 from 15–17 July 2026, joining colleagues across the global obesity community for three days of scientific exchange and international collaboration.
EASO President Professor Volkan Yumuk co-chaired the EASO partner symposium, “Changing Perspectives: Different Looks into Obesity Diagnosis, Treatment and Targets,” alongside former WOF president Professor Louise Baur. This session brought together Professor Dror Dicker, Dr Andreea Ciudin Mihai and Dr Arya Sharma to examine approaches to obesity diagnosis and management, including the EASO Framework and the importance of setting meaningful, person-centred treatment targets.

Professor Yumuk also contributed to the session “Cancer, Obesity and Weight Loss,” a crucial theme given the recent WHO landmark analysis estimating that cancer cases are set to nearly double by 2050, alongside increasing evidence on the impact of obesity management on cancer incidence, highlighting this increasingly important area of clinical research.

ICO2026 was also an opportunity to celebrate two distinguished EASO colleagues. Professor María del Mar Malagón, co-chair of the EASO Basic and Discovery Science Working Group, received the Wertheimer Award, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to basic science in obesity research. Professor Antje Körner, co-chair of the EASO Childhood Obesity Working Group received the Willendorf Award, recognising outstanding clinically oriented obesity research.

We warmly congratulate Mar and Antje on receiving these prestigious honours and thank World Obesity Federation and the ICO2026 organisers for an excellent congress and a valuable opportunity to strengthen international collaboration.
