Melania Manco

Melania Manco is a professor of Paediatrics and associate professor of Endocrinology. She is Senior Scientist since January 2008 at the Scientific Directorate of the Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital in Rome, one of the largest hospitals and research institutes for Paediatrics in Europe.

After graduating in Medicine, she was clinical fellow in 1998 at the Dept. of Anatomy, Cell Biology and Injury Science, NJUMD, Newark, USA. In 2000, Dr. Manco obtained a Master in Obesity, a Specialty in Endocrinology and Diabetology in 2002, and a Ph.D. in Nutrition and Metabolism in 2005.

Dr Manco has several year clinical and research experience in the field of paediatric obesity, insulin resistance, and prediction of cardiovascular disease as evident by her impressive scientific productivity and track-record of publications in high-quality journals.

She is board member of the European College of the American College of Nutrition (www.europe-nutrition.org) and associate editor of the Journal of the American College of Nutrition.

She is coordinator of two medium-scale projects granted by the Italian Ministry of Health. “The origin of cardiovascular risk in overweight preschool children” study investigates mechanisms leading to incident cardiovascular disease in pre-schoolers. The “Feeding foetus’ low grade inflammation and insulin-resistance” explores the causative relationship between the maternal diet and the newborn’s cardiometabolic asset, including epigenetic profiling.

Dr Manco is partner of two large-scale projects funded by the European Commission under the FP7 – ICT Programme, the MD Paedigree (Model-Driven Paediatric European Digital Repository; www.md-paedigree.eu) and the DAPHNE (Data as a service platform for healthy lifestyle and preventive medicine; www.daphne-fp7.eu) projects.
